BiteBuddy

Studio Venture · Ongoing

Building restaurant technology from both sides of the counter.

BiteBuddy is an ongoing restaurant technology and local food media venture built and operated by Whitespace Studio.

We work with independent restaurants on direct online ordering, websites, in-store hardware, and the systems that connect them — while also running a local food magazine and video channel focused on Metro Vancouver's restaurant scene.

Why BiteBuddy

Restaurants don't experience technology as separate products.

A restaurant owner may hear terms like website, online ordering, POS, tablet app, printer integration, email marketing, and customer retention.

But behind the counter, those are rarely separate problems.

The real question is much simpler:

Can a customer place an order, can the restaurant receive it reliably, and can the team manage everything without becoming software experts?

BiteBuddy grew around that question.

Instead of treating every part of the restaurant experience as a separate product, we started looking at how the pieces could work together around the way independent restaurants actually operate.

One project. Three perspectives.

Discover

Local food and restaurant media

We explore Metro Vancouver's restaurant scene through reviews, guides, news, and video.

That gives us a view of the experience from the diner's side: how people discover restaurants, what information they look for, what creates trust, and what makes them come back.

Connect

Direct relationships with customers

For restaurant owners, BiteBuddy provides a way to accept direct pickup orders through their own digital presence rather than relying entirely on third-party marketplaces.

We set up the website, menu, ordering experience, payments, and supporting tools around the restaurant.

Run

From online order to kitchen

The system continues past checkout.

Orders reach the restaurant in real time through the manager tablet, customer and restaurant notifications are triggered, and order tickets can be printed automatically for the counter and kitchen.

The goal is to make the technology disappear into the restaurant's normal workflow.

We don't only build for restaurants. We spend time in them.

BiteBuddy's editorial side began as a way to build a stronger local presence around food.

It became something we genuinely enjoy running.

Through the BiteBuddy magazine and BiteBuddyEats video channel, we visit restaurants, follow local openings and changes, try food, talk to operators, and spend time observing the customer experience ourselves.

That work isn't the same as our restaurant technology business, but the two sides teach us different things about the same industry.

One shows us what diners experience.

The other shows us what happens behind the counter.

Together, they give us a much more grounded view of the problems we're designing for.

Then we went behind the counter.

Working directly with independent restaurants made another problem clear.

For many small operators, adopting technology is not about finding another dashboard or signing up for another SaaS product.

They want the system to work.

So we designed BiteBuddy around a hands-on setup model.

The restaurant gives us its menu and the information we need. We configure the ordering experience, prepare the required hardware, install it on-site, test the workflow, and help the team get started.

The restaurant shouldn't need an IT department just to accept a pickup order.

Menu in. Working system out.

A typical setup looks like this:

  1. 01

Restaurant shares its menu and business information

We organize the menu, modifiers, pricing, hours, pickup settings, and the information customers need.

  2. 02

We prepare the website and ordering experience

For restaurants that need one, we create a simple customer-facing website with a direct path to ordering.

  3. 03

    We configure the system

Ordering, payments, notifications, restaurant settings, tablet access, and printing are prepared before installation.

  4. 04

    We install the hardware

The restaurant receives a configured tablet and printer setup designed around its counter and kitchen workflow.

  5. 05

    We test with the team

We confirm that orders reach the right places and staff can manage the workflow comfortably.

  6. 06

    The restaurant goes live

Customers can order directly while the restaurant continues operating through a workflow designed around its existing business.

From browser to kitchen.

A customer experiences a simple ordering flow.

Behind that flow, several systems have to work together reliably.

Customer

  1. Restaurant website
  2. Menu
  3. Cart
  4. Checkout
  5. Order confirmation

BiteBuddy

  1. Order created
  2. Payment and order processing
  3. Customer email notification
  4. Restaurant notification
  5. Real-time tablet push

In store

  1. Restaurant Manager tablet
  2. Order received
  3. Order ticket printed
  4. Counter + Kitchen
  5. Order prepared
  6. Pickup

The customer's experience may only last a few minutes.

Designing everything behind it so those few minutes feel simple is the harder part.

Software doesn't stop at the browser.

An online order only matters if the restaurant actually receives it.

That sounds obvious, but it changes how we think about restaurant software.

We can't stop at a successful checkout screen.

BiteBuddy extends the ordering experience into the physical restaurant through a dedicated manager application, real-time notifications, and printer workflows that can route order information where staff actually need it.

We provide and configure the tablet and printer hardware ourselves, install it on-site, and test it within the restaurant's real workflow.

That physical last step is part of the product.

Built for restaurant teams, not IT teams.

Many of the independent restaurants we work with don't want another system they have to configure and maintain.

They want online ordering to work reliably while they focus on running the restaurant.

That has shaped many of the decisions behind BiteBuddy:

  • fewer unnecessary settings
  • clearer restaurant-side workflows
  • hardware prepared before delivery
  • on-site installation
  • simple order management
  • automatic notifications
  • practical printing workflows
  • direct support when something goes wrong

The technology behind the system can be complex.

The experience for the restaurant shouldn't be.

The website is part of the system.

Not every independent restaurant needs a large website.

For restaurants that need a better digital home, we build simple sites around the information customers actually use:

  • menu
  • hours
  • location
  • restaurant information
  • pickup ordering
  • contact details
  • promotions when relevant

The objective isn't to give every restaurant a complicated redesign.

It's to give customers a clear place to understand the business and order directly.

Running in real restaurants.

BiteBuddy is not a prototype.

The ordering platform is currently used by local restaurants in Metro Vancouver, processing real customer orders through the systems we've designed and continue to operate.

That means we experience the product differently from a typical portfolio project.

We see what happens when:

  • a real customer places an order
  • a restaurant is busy
  • a printer doesn't behave as expected
  • staff need to understand something quickly
  • menu information changes
  • a workflow that looked good on a screen meets an actual counter or kitchen

Those moments continually shape what we build next.

    In Development

A deeper restaurant operations system currently being developed around what we're learning from the ordering platform and real restaurant workflows.

What BiteBuddy keeps teaching us.

01

Build around the operation, not the feature list.

The useful question isn't how many features a restaurant platform has.

It's whether those features fit the way the restaurant actually works.

02

Setup is part of the product.

Software that is easy to buy but difficult to configure simply moves the problem to the customer.

For the restaurants we work with, installation, configuration, testing, and support are part of the experience we're designing.

03

Simple interfaces usually hide complicated systems.

A restaurant employee may only need to see one clear order on a tablet.

Behind it are payments, databases, notifications, printing, synchronization, customer communication, and failure handling.

We do the complicated work so the interface doesn't have to expose it.

04

Being close to the real environment changes what you build.

We don't only hear about restaurant problems through feature requests.

We visit restaurants, install the hardware, talk with operators, watch orders move through the system, create restaurant websites, and spend time covering the local food scene.

That proximity regularly exposes problems we wouldn't have discovered from a desk.

Why BiteBuddy belongs at Whitespace Studio.

BiteBuddy gives us something client projects alone cannot.

A product we are responsible for designing, developing, installing, operating, supporting, and improving over time.

It has pushed us beyond thinking about websites as isolated deliverables.

We think more about how a website connects to operations, how digital actions reach the physical world, how non-technical users manage systems, and how a product behaves long after launch.

Those lessons carry back into the work we do for every client.

BiteBuddy is still evolving.

The ordering platform is live.

Restaurants are using it today.

The food magazine and BiteBuddyEats continue to grow alongside it.

And we're still building the next pieces.

Have a digital problem that doesn't fit neatly into one box?

Sometimes the right solution is a website. Sometimes it's a workflow, an integration, a small custom tool — or a combination of them.

Tell us how your business works, and we'll help figure out what actually needs to be built.
